Homelessness on St. Croix is a difficult and challenging issue. There have been many contributing factors that have added to the increase in homelessness in our territory. The hurricanes of 2017 created a number of voids in the lives of Virgin Islanders. These include, but are not limited to, the loss of our housing stock, an in-crease in short and long-term rental rates, as well as the loss of many business and employment opportunities following the storms. As a result, many Virgin Islanders continue to find themselves struggling to make ends meet, and, unfortunately, for the most vulnerable, without a roof over their heads.

In 2016, Frederiksted Health Care, Inc. launched a homeless outreach initiative that sought to address the needs and is-sues of those individuals experiencing homelessness.

We know that healthcare and homelessness are inextricably linked. Health problems can cause a person’s homelessness as well as be exacerbated by the experience. Conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, and HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C, are found at high rates among the homeless population, sometimes three to six times higher than that of the general population.
People who have mental health and substance abuse disorders and who are homeless are more likely to have immediate, life-threatening physical illnesses and live in dangerous conditions.

Frederiksted Health Care, Inc. is committed to ending homelessness and improving the health outcomes for the homeless population here in the Virgin Islands.
